With the publication of this novel in the United States, English-speaking fans will now be able to read the true story of this great love affair, which triumphed over so much adversity yet failed to overcome human fallibility.

Injured on the Carpathian front and later sought by the Bolsheviks, he makes a daring escape across the Black Sea. Too proud to accept payment for the boatful of arms he hands over to the Nationalists, he faces years of struggle to make a new life in the Turkish Republic rising from the embers of the dying Ottoman Empire.

All he has is his dignity and love. Shura: An innocent sixteen-year-old beauty enchanted by Tchaikovsky's music and Moscow's glittering lights, falls in love with Seyt.

A potential victim of the Bolsheviks due to her family's wealth and social standing, she is determined to follow her heart and accompanies Seyt on his perilous flight over the Black Sea.

I received this book for my birthday and was so looking forward of reading it, and now when I finally finished it I had so many mixed feelings. It isn't bad but the way is written puts me off, so many questions were never answered, so many characters neglected, like Shura's dad we never found out what happened to him.

I wanted so much to find out what happened, and then in the I received this book for my birthday and was so looking forward of reading it, and now when I finally finished it I had so many mixed feelings.

I wanted so much to find out what happened, and then in the end I wanted to scream. After everything they have been through, you'd at least expect them to marry.

Anyway I give this book a 3 stars only because it was based on true events and the characters in a way became dear to me. View all 5 comments.

Mar 07, Gizem rated it really liked it Shelves: reviewed. Despite the four stars, I feel like there are quite some gaps which need to be filled.

As a reader I have to bear in mind that this story is based on true events, so there are bound to be questions which cannot be easily answered.

Nevertheless, I often stumbled over the flow of action and wished Bezmen elaborated more on some events.

Like, she totally neglected Shura's dad: did he die, if so, how and why can't I find any line of sorrow for her father? Besides, all of a sudden her mom pops up on Despite the four stars, I feel like there are quite some gaps which need to be filled.

Besides, all of a sudden her mom pops up on stage: where the hell has she been, erhmm I thought she was dead? And then we have this so-called secret affair going on between Shura and Kurt Seyt.

After all the hardships they've gone through in Russia and Turkey, you'd at least expect them to marry.

But no, Seyit isn't ready to take this step?! Why leave your family in disgrace for the girl you love, but not marry her.

He eventually cheats on her due to a misunderstanding, which made me question their unconditional-love-you-forever-and-I'll-never-let-you-go feelings btw.

On top of this, it's not clear to me why he marries Murvet. Well ok, Shura wanted to have her revenge and because of this they grew apart, but I think Bezmen could have been less sloppy about this part.

The focus lies primarily on the love story, but Bezmen also cleverly shows the political frictions at the time in a non-tedious way.

Got me emotional about what has happened in the republic of Crimea and I felt proud of my roots. It's unbelievable how Turkey welcomed thousands of Russian refugees with open arms.

I don't know to what extent this actually happened, which isn't the point right now. But I think such a tribute worthy event should be more apparant in Western society.

I then realized it was a series of books! I hope the rest of the series will be published in English, because the writing and storytelling is wonderful!

I binge watched the Turkish production reading the English subtitles, gripped at the edge of my seat by what would happen next.

Please do watch the series and read this beautifully written account of two lovers escaping Russia during the horrible revolution.

I loved it 45 stars. Jan 17, Lia Christo rated it it was amazing. A story of overcoming, of power, of struggles, of dramas and of much emotion.

At the end of the reading, I felt as if I had left my heart in Russia. A heart pitied for all that could have been, for all that they have ceased to live and especially for all they could have achieved.

A real report done in a lovely way. Long may we continue to learn about past generations, as we hope our grandchildren will remember us equally affectionately.

When I found out that it was based on a true story written by Kurt Seyits grand daughter, I had to read the book.

This book does not disappoint as long you keep in mind that 1. The tv series was exaggerated a lot for entertainment the book is s lot tamer and 2.

That this story is based on true events that occurred many years ago and there are naturally some gaps of information. The epilogue and photographs were a beautiful ending to this sad story.

Full review to come. This was a really sad book. History is full of wars and human misery. Families are torn apart and what was once will never be again.

This book really gave faces to that history, and at the end, I felt myself tear up. The translation Of this book does make the writing strange at times, but the story was still compelling, romantic, and at the end-sad.

I watched the TV series on Netflix last winter and screamed at the screen at the unexpected ending. The book was, of course, different, and reality This was a really sad book.

The book was, of course, different, and reality is never as romantic as a television show. The story of two displaced Russians who cling to each other - each holding the other as a reminder of what was- can never end happily.

I have this image of Seyt and Shura together now as they never could be in life. Dec 27, Esilda Trushaj rated it really liked it Shelves: foreign-authors , biography-autobio.

I have just finished the book. It was really interesting, because it entwines that period of history of Revolution in Russia in with the love story of Kurt Sejit and Sura.

The author described in a perfect way how the love story began, the struggle and especially their feelings. The lyricism of love grabbed me attention.

Her describtions well not dull papers. I felt the strength, the power of love, the values etc. I admired the courage, the loyalty, the education of Sejit that was a man that used both I have just finished the book.

I admired the courage, the loyalty, the education of Sejit that was a man that used both his heart and his mind.

Sura met him at a tender age. I would consider her a typical aristocratic lady, very beautiful, inexperienced in love that followed Sejit in every step and sacrificed her family just to be with the man she loved.

To be honest,I did not like the way how the author brought the separation of the couple,Sejit betrayed her, because he thought she had someone elese.

How can such a powerful love destroyed when it is build in name of trust and sacrifice? Or,how Sejit married in a short period of time with Murka when he did not love her?

These were sequences of a soap-opera. Anyway,I really enjoyed the book,it is worth reading it. View 2 comments. Apr 27, Sabina Pekin rated it it was amazing.

I was extremely fortunate to get my hands on an official English edition thanks to Feyza Howell, who was the official translator for the novel.

Without her fantastic work I wouldn't have been introduced to this enchanting story of love and war and struggle. Every theme of this story is timeless and one that every person can relate to.

From the detailed imagery of the weather, the mansions, the bloodshed, to the inner emotional turmoil of the characters who are so helplessly in love.

The Netflix I was extremely fortunate to get my hands on an official English edition thanks to Feyza Howell, who was the official translator for the novel.

The Netflix series albeit having 46 episodes, does not even scratch the surface of the story. The book contains so much more character development as we get an insight into Seyt's childhood and why he was chosen to become a military man like his father.

The book also digs deeper into the immense emotional chaos of the Seyt and Shura as it illustrates their level of stream of consciousness, which were heightened by a wide use of pathetic fallacy.

Although the story is a period romance, it displays a timeless message to its readers, which is that love has no boundaries! Jun 24, Beverly Jean rated it really liked it.

When the transition from Shura and Seyit to Seyit and Mürvet happens, I found this part to be clunky and awkward.

This is where I took a point off of the score. Here's where I might have included the stories of other Russian Aristocrats escaping to Turkey trivia and what that transition period was like.

And yet, the whole story is based on real people, real documents, real loss, and it all really happened. But there is a way for a writer to introduce new characters and storyline.

This book also helps to explain the vast numbers of interesting Russian objets d'art that appear on PBS's 'Antique Roadshow'. I probably would not have read the book if not for the series on Netflix but I'm so glad I did both.

I've become more interested in that time period and just a bit before for Russia, Crimea and Turkey. I know in real life the ending had to be the way it did but I sure wish it turned out differently for both of them.

This is one of the best love stories I have read in years. The fairy tale romance along with the reality of war and life in the early 20th century was amazing.

I enjoyed the pictures as well. I read this book as an e-book through Kobo. The translation there was a bit spotty at times but I knew what was meant.

I did however buy the book because it was so worth it. You will see the story unfold in your mind. It's amazing!

Thanks Nermin for sharing the story of your family. I hope someday that your second book will be translated as well. I don't want to name the book because it will give away the ending of this story.

Loved this English translation based on real life people. My introduction was the Turkish tv series, something like 46 episodes on Netflix.

After a really strong beginning it sort of devolved into soap opera but I couldn't stop watching. Knowing it was based on a book by Kurt Seyit's granddaughter, I had to read her account of this amazing love story about a dashing soldier in the Czar's Imperial Guard and a young Russian noble woman.

They escape Russia and certain death during the Russian revo Loved this English translation based on real life people. They escape Russia and certain death during the Russian revolution, fleeing to British-occupied Istanbul.

Their escape is much more dramatic in the book. The book is fictionalized, based on the author's research and some first-hand accounts. It is based on fact with some conjecture to create a cohesive narrative.

There are a few awkward parts where the author inserts herself into the narrative but otherwise I found it a captivating story.

Those who require a Hollywood ending need not apply. I felt sorry for Murka who was an innocent causality tossed between two lovers but yet remained loyal and by her husband.

Even though I wanted Kurt and Shura to stay together, Seyt made the right decision by convincing Shura to go to Paris; for they would have destroyed both their lives by continuing the way they were now that he was married with children.

A wonderful and tragic romance about two lovers and the horrors of a revolution. Feb 04, Katie Andrews rated it it was amazing. I picked this book up after finishing the Netflix series based on the book.

I could not put it down and finished it in three days! The history behind the story is so intriguing. It tells the story based on real life characters during WWI and the Russian Revolution, which was a part of history that I was already very interested in.

The book sparked me to do even more research and learning on that time period and what else was happening in the world I picked this book up after finishing the Netflix series based on the book.

The book sparked me to do even more research and learning on that time period and what else was happening in the world during that time.

It has opened my eyes to so much more than I had given thought to before. I saw all of the episodes of this saga on Netflix, then was inspired to read the book.

I really enjoyed reading about these real peoples and what happened to them during the Russian Revolution. I feel uncomfortable about making negative comments, however the translation leaves a lot to be desired.

I let the awkward selection of words wash over me, and tried to figure out what was meant without discontinuing reading.

I think some other readers may give up, with the book unfinished. The grammar, se I saw all of the episodes of this saga on Netflix, then was inspired to read the book.

The grammar, sentence structure and word selection was compromised. I watched the Turkish series based on this book based on a true story and love d it I was curious to read the book to see the story somewhat enhanced from the eyes of the actual granddaugher of Kurt Seyt.

It was interesting to see the similarities and differences. True or not, I enjoyed the TV series much more and highly recommend it.

Gave more to the overall story. I thought it was beautifully written, a bittersweet romance that very very sadly does not end well.

I enjoyed the book and the show immensely and the soundtrack is beautiful. This story sweeps you away to a far off time and place.

Dec 02, Didi A rated it it was ok. Still, it speaks to the potency of the real love, war and tragedy, which inspired the writing that I actually stuck with reading through.

Vivid Having watched part of this story in Netflicks, I was curious how it ended. The tragedy of the Russian Revolution is portrayed vividly and in a heartfelt manner.

I was disappointed in the way the love story devolved; I am one who prefers happy endings, I guess.

If course the author was telling a real story if real people, and thus had to follow their reality. A must read!

Beautifully written story about a fascinating life! Full of romance, history, tragedy and happiness. A hauntingly beautiful story that will stick with you forever.

Cannot recommend enough! I cannot wait until the other books in the series are translated in to English also!

A forever favorite! Nov 21, Disha Thakur rated it it was amazing. Devastatingly Beautiful! These two words came to mind immediately upon the completion of this series.

This book took a wrong turn somewhere towards the end. I really liked it at first but the ending of their story was really disappointing.

I ended up hating both of the main characters. The love that was portrayed at the beginning was not really there after they fled Russia. The historical events were well written though and that is the only thing I liked in this book.

I watched the Turkish series before I read this so I pretty much knew what to expect. It is not a direct adaptation of Kurt Seyt ve Murka, which is the second novel in the series, nor of Shura , which is the third novel.

War dramas are easy to fall in love with: the inherent stakes, the life-changing consequences, the separations, the loss, the action, the pain.

This particular drama takes place in Petrograd St. Petersburg and Crimea, a Turkish territory annexed by Russia prior to the war.

Sura is a Russian aristocrat, and we all know their fate post-WWI. Romance tropes abound — the first meeting at a ball where the hero has made a bet with his buddies about making a conquest.

The insta-love. The older, worldly-wise rich woman with a history and a jealous streak. The rival who works to undermine their young love.

The very strong emotive response to everything. Just like I was also IN NO WAY upset that this first kiss took place during a ball, in a conservatory and took approximately half an episode to complete because Seyit kept whisper-yelling hero-tropes.
